چکیده
Illusory contours (ICs) are contours seen where there are no corresponding gradients in the stimulus. Although ICs were first reported around the turn of the century, interest in this phenomenon dramatically increased after Kanizsa (1955) presented his striking demonstrations. Since then ICs have received a great deal of attention both experimentally and theoretically (for reviews see Parks 1984; Purgheänd Coren 1992; Lesher 1995). Figure 1 is a typical example. Most observers see a rectangular illusory surface partially occluding the black inducers in the display. The illusory surface also appears brighter than the surround. Von der Heydt et al (1984) found that many cells in area 18 of monkey visual cortex respond to such illusory edges when they are placed in the cell's preferred position and orientation for ordinary luminance gradients.

متن کاملBoundary completion in illusory contours: Interpolation
Most computational and neural-style models of contour completion (ie illusory and occluded contours) are based on interpolation: the filling in of an edge between two visible edges. The results of three experiments suggest an alternative conception, that units are formed as a result of extrapolation from visible edges. In three experiments, subjects reported illusory contours between standard i...
متن کاملOrientation discrimination and tilt aftereffects with luminance and illusory contours
Orientation discrimination and tilt aftereffects (TAEs) were measured to determine if the orientation of luminance and illusory contours are processed by separate mechanisms. The assumption was made that if a single mechanism supports the perception of both types of contours, then illusory and luminance contours that support the same level of orientation discrimination will be equally effective...
متن کاملA double neon colour illusion
A new visual illusion is presented. When two neon-coloured illusory bands overlap each other, the filling-in at the region of overlap is perceived as different from those of the overlapping bands, resulting in an additional illusory shape at the region of overlap. An experiment with ten na|« ve participants was performed to measure the illusory percept. The results show that illusory surfaces m...
متن کاملIllusory Contours Do Not Pass through the "Blind Spot"
Our visual percepts are not fully determined by the physical stimulus input. That is why we perceive crisp bounding contours even in the absence of luminance-defined borders in visual illusions such as the Kanizsa figure. It is important to understand which neural processes are involved in creating these artificial visual experiences because this might tell us how we perceive coherent objects i...
